Don't Phone and Drive

In some states there has been a law passed that bans the use of cell phones while driving. Texas has failed to pass this law yet but I believe it needs to be done. I'm not saying it should be where you can't use your cell phone at all while driving but it should be required to have a hands free unit. This means cutting out text messaging all together. I used to be a fan of texting while driving and there’s no telling how many times I had to slam on my brakes because I wasn't paying attention to the car in front of me. I know there are several other people out there that have been in the same situation. Also, not only does using your cell phone while driving put you in danger but also other cars around you and pedestrians. I believe by requiring a hands free unit while driving will decrease car accidents because people will start paying more attention to the roads. Cell phones are a huge distraction and something needs to be done about it.

I will comment on my classmate Natasha’s blog: “Do not Phone and Drive.” This topic is very important now that the rate of accidents has increased since the cell phones have become a fashion (although necessary). Natasha shows herself concerned for passing a new law for banning the use of cell phones while driving. She has recognized that it is dangerous talking thru cell or texting because she has experienced sometimes slamming her breaks while texting.
She suggests disallowing the use of cell phone, but allowing the hands-free units; however, I believe that hands-free units are also distracting in some way. I have used those kinds of units and I found out that these devices are distracting, also. They make you to have your attention in the conversation rather than in the traffic or signals, so I think hands-free devices would not help at all. We should educate ourselves in avoiding the use of cell phone because we know that it is distracting, instead of hiding from the police to avoid a ticket. Therefore, use the cell when you really really need it because let us recognize that there are sometimes the cell phones are necessary when getting directions or receiving emergency calls. So if it were banned, we would be trapped and we would have to violate the law in some moment for an emergency.

In Natasha’s blog, “Don’t Phone and Drive”, she is suggesting that Texas pass a law banning the use of a cell phone (without a hands free device) while driving. She first describes how she used to be a fan of texting while driving and would have to slam on her brakes several times. I think she did well on throwing that comment in there because I am positive I along with countless other people can relate to that same exact situation. Many of us are far too careless on the road the second we hear our phones ring or vibrate. Imagine how many accidents could be prevented if we would just ignore that call from our best friend, or wait to read that text message from our boyfriend or girlfriend until we got home. I completely agree with Natasha, I think if there was law banning the use of talking/texting while driving then many accidents could be prevented and lives could be spared. Hopefully we will see this law in action sometime soon..

Natasha, the author of the blog There’s No Place Like Texas, posted a blog discussing recent laws passed by some states banning the use of cell phones while driving. She states that Texas has failed to pass the law on banning cell phone use while driving. Through her blog she reveals the dangers of driving while talking pr texting on a cell phone. She is able to convey the dangers of cell phone use while driving by providing her own personal experiences. Natasha is very convincing with her arguments that a law banning cell phone use while driving is needed.

The blog also discusses about a safer alternative way of using a cell phone while driving. Natasha proposes the use of a hands free unit to talk on a cell phone while driving. The use of a hands free device to talk on a cell phone would reduce car accidents caused by talking on a cell phone. A driver would be able to talk on a cell phone and be able to keep their hands on the wheel with the use of a hands free device. With the law of banning cell phone use while driving would also prevent drivers to text while driving. The law would demand drivers to keep their full attention to the road.

I completely agree with Natasha’s blog. Texas is a growing state with a ever increasing population, which leads to roads being more populated. It is important to keep all of our citizens safe. Banning the use of cell phone while driving will help increase safety on our roads and reduce the number of car accidents. I am able to relate to Natasha’s blog because of her personal experiences, which is the reason for my support of a needed law to ban cell phone use while driving. A law to increase safety never hurt anybody.

In response to “Don’t Phone and Drive” in There’s No Place Like Texas blog. I agree with Natasha in her claim, Texas should pass law to ban talking on the phone while driving. In her blog, Natasha states that she has slammed on her brake so many times because she was not pay attention to what happen on the road. On the phone while driving is as danger as drunk-driving. On the phone while driving is very distracting drivers’ ability to respond to an action. According to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, “cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year.” Drivers talking on cell phones were 18% slower to react to break lights. Also, one study shows that “chatty motorists are less adept than drunken drivers with blood alcohol levels exceeding 0.08.” We can see how danger it is with driving and talking on the phone at the same time. Another solution that Natasha brings up is “I believe by requiring a hands free unit while driving will decrease car accidents because people will start paying more attention to the roads.” This solution is help as well as bans the use of cell phone while driving completely. Natasha has done a good job in bringing the problem and the solution to the problem. Her entry is applying well to students because students tend to talk and drive at the same time.

I am commenting on my classmate Natosha's blog concerning the use of cell phones while driving. This is a topic that needs to be raised. We all do it, we get caught up and get busy and find ourselves doing work on the road or catching up with friends. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 25% of all police reported accidents have cell phones contributing to them and this is only the ones reported. I believe it will not get any better either without intervention because now not only are people just talking on the phone but they are texting as well. There needs to be laws put into place to restrict cell phone use. Drivers should not be allowed to text while driving and also they should be required to use hands free devices while talking. I know this will be a continuing problem but hopefully it would cut down on the issue. I mean there are speed limits but people choose to break those rules too. The idea is that if they get caught there should be consequences for being careless. People don't like to pay tickets. I speak for myself as well I know I am just as guilty as the next person. I know I would be less likely to use my phone if I knew I would get in trouble.

I was reading one of my collegues blog and the story was that cell phones had been banned while driving vehicles. Statistics said that more than 50% of car accidents are due to drivers being on their cell phones. I'd be a hypocrite if i'd say that people who talk on their cell while driving should be punished. Well lets face it, I do it too and i'm pretty sure everyone else does. With those darn cell phones these day, it seems like the phone is glued to everyone's ear. What's worse is that I even see people texting while driving. Cell phones are a huge distraction while driving and i've seen with my own eyes where people run red lights since they are oblivious to their surroundings.

I researched and found out that not only is the United States trying to ban cell phones, but other countries are doing it as well. I'm curious to find out if banning cell phone usage while driving, means no more off hand phones? What I'm trying to get at is now adays people use headsets, bluetooth, or even install blue tooth into their vehicle to talk without holding the cell phone. Would this effect the same way to distract drivers? In my opinion I think banning cell phones is a good idea. It would probably bring the rates of accidents down a tad bit if people were more aware and focused on the road.
